Autobiography

2010_April_Honeymoon.jpg

A nomad, a wanderer, lover of everything beautiful. A lover of life, wine, exotic and forgotten places, hidden corners, and small things that could be beautiful. A lover of stars, mountain tops, little kisses, and voices from around the planet.

Vic Schoen, My Father

Vic_Schoen_in_the_1970s_at_the_Pageant_of_the_Masters_in_Laguna_Beach.jpg

Composer, Arranger, Conductor

"Vic Schoen, the man who had been identified with the Andrews sisters for over a decade, and whose orchestra had accompanied the girls in over 90% of their recordings, parted from the trio in late 1951. He went on to work with several other artists, producing major hits, including Patti Page's "Old Cape Cod" and the Weavers' "On Top Of Old Smokey". But never again was the maestro to become so well associated with another singer as he and his band had become with the sisters. Schoen eventually married and divorced Kay Starr, then wed Marion Hutton of Glen Miller fame (Betty Hutton's sister).
Although Schoen's decision to leave the girls was not forced, it was nevertheless traumatic, especially for the trio, who sorely missed him and his remarkable skill at arranging music."

...........from 'Swing It: The Andrew Sisters Story', p.136

"For years, the Vic Schoen Orchestra played music that at least approached the beauty and variety of a rainbow, but historically, the ensemble is about as elusive as that phenomenon in the sky."
----------Big Band Reader, p.266.

Ella Fitzgerald's 1945 scat recording of "Flying Home" arranged by Vic Schoen would later be described by The New York Times as "one of the most influential vocal jazz records of the decade....

My Family Past

1941_-_Pepere_On_The_Voyage_To_Cuba.jpg

My mother's family is French Canadian (Quebec), the Petits and the Rolands, probably from France about 200 years ago. My father's family came from Poland via Germany in 1891. My Polish great great grandfather changed his name from Leopold Schein to Louis Schoen in 1899. He was married to a Hungarian woman named Jennie Goldman. From his 7 children, came at least 27 families, including my grandfather Harry.

Pola (Polar Path) was white and round, loved to play with rattlesnakes, and she died at age 6, of accumulated snake bites.

To wish for a great love seems beyond belief

peace and tranquility seem easier to attain

winning the lottery possible

finding a pot of gold, maybe

passion's not hard, really

but love is the great chimera

laughing in my face

taunting me.
